DISASTER: PANAY ISLAND

Dear Fellow Vincentians,
Typhoon Frank hit our country last June 19 and left thousands of families homeless in Panay island, in the country’s Visayas Region. It was reportedly the worst disaster that has ever struck the region. The SSVP National Council responded by sending financial assistance for the immediate basic needs of the victims in Iloilo, Roxas, Aklan and Antique, the 4 provinces in Panay island. Almost one thousand bags containing basic needs for immediate sustenance were distributed to poor families.
SSVP Australia quickly and generously responded by sending the financial assistance of AU$ 12,500 for the victims. Since many NGOs including several religious organizations and Government agencies have responded in giving relief assistance to the victims, SSVP Philippines plans to help with emergency shelter rehabilitation like materials for totally and partially damaged houses. Housing materials to be given are GI sheets, nails, wood and posts. The SSVP Council from the four provinces will be the ones to identify the beneficiaries with priority given to the poorest of the poor. The SSVP National Council of the Philippines will give an updated accomplishment report for this new project in due course.
As we continue our struggle in meeting the many needs of the poor under our care, we carry the cherished thought that you have always been with us with your prayers in solidarity with our poor. This gives us strength and inspiration. This offers hope and consolation to our poor brethren.

CYCLONE NARGIS EN BIRMANIE – TREMBLEMENT DE TERRE EN CHINE
AIDEZ NOUS A LEUR VENIR EN AIDE !

Vous le savez, le Cyclone Nargis a violemment frappé la Birmanie il y a quelques jours. Les bilans – encore provisoires – sont extrêmement lourds : entre 30.000 et 110.000 morts, 230.000 disparus et 1,5 million de sans abris.
Peu après, un terrible tremblement de terre frappait la province du Sichuan en Chine, faisant près de 20.000 morts, des dizaines de milliers de disparus et de sans-abri.

Comme toujours et comme partout dans cette situation, les besoins sont immenses et extrêmement urgents : nourriture, eau potable, médicaments, vêtements… A plus long terme, il s’agira de reconstruire, puis de tenter de permettre aux personnes affectées de reprendre une vie normale au plus vite…

La situation politique en Birmanie rend encore plus difficile d’apporter de l’aide aux victimes depuis l’étranger: la Société de Saint Vincent de Paul est présente sur place !

En Chine, si la SSVP n’est pas présente dans la région, elle a, par le biais du Conseil Central de Hong Kong les connexions nécessaires avec l’Eglise et Caritas pour apporter de l’aide.

Nous devons profiter de cette force … mais sans argent, les Vincentiens ne peuvent rien !

Malheureusement l’été 2007 a été particulièrement catastrophique pour certains pays qui ont souffert de graves inondations comme le Bangladesh, l’Inde ou le Burkina Faso, ou des tremblements de terre comme tout récemment au Pérou.

Le Conseil Général de la Confédération a lancé depuis le premier instant, une souscription destinée au fonds « catastrophes » afin d’aider les pays affectés.
